Sustainability and energy

At the heart of this partnership lies a shared commitment to a more sustainable future.
The University of Adelaide’s Institute for Sustainability, Energy and Resources and Environment Institute and the University of Surrey’s Institute for Sustainability are leading collaborative efforts to address critical global challenges - from climate resilience and clean energy to sustainable supply chains and circular economy practices.
Through interdisciplinary research, co-supervision of students, and student exchanges, this theme empowers the next generation of sustainability leaders. Projects such as Earth observation for sustainable supply chains and circular economy strategies for the space sector exemplify how the partnership will deliver real-world impact across industries and borders.
The key areas of exploration in this theme are:
- Energy and Environment – focusing on energy transition and decarbonisation and the safety, environmental and health issues associated with this transition that need to be addressed.
- Sustainable Production and Consumption – creating innovative solutions and strategies that minimise waste, optimise resource efficiency, and reduce environmental impacts to ensure sustainable production and consumption.
- Sustainable systems – developing a range of analytic and modelling tools and techniques for sustainability, informed by the conceptual and empirical research of the social research on sustainability theme.
- Sustainable and Resilient Supply Chains - restructuring supply chains to effectively manage disruptions and organisational change by leveraging digital technologies for sustainable and circular transitions to promote supply chain sustainability and resilience.
