IPAS Masterclass Series Empowers Researchers to Network

Last week, IPAS hosted a highly engaging masterclass with Associate Professor Peter Grace on the often-challenging topic of networking, especially for those who’d rather avoid it.
In How to Network When You Don’t Want to Network, Dr. Grace shared candid reflections from his own journey, moving from a reluctant networker to a well-connected researcher and leader. He offered practical advice on how to build authentic professional relationships early in one’s career, highlighting the importance of generosity, integrity, and mutual respect.
Drawing on his experiences from postdoctoral research to his current role as Chair ad interim of the Department of Symptom Research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Grace emphasised that networking is not about superficial interactions but about cultivating lasting connections that can open doors to collaborations and career opportunities.
The session was well-attended, with lively discussion and honest reflections from participants over morning tea. A/Prof Grace’s insights provided valuable takeaways for researchers at all stages—particularly those building their networks while staying true to their scientific focus.
Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the conversation!
